On this day, prayers are recited to dedicate the accumulated merit to the well-being of all sentient beings and to the flourishing of the Buddha Dharma.
Chökhor Düchen — Festival of Turning the Wheel of Dharma
Chökhor Düchen is among the four principal sacred observances of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, in which he expounded the Four Noble Truths at Sarnath, seven weeks following his attainment of enlightenment. This foundational teaching, known as the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma, marked the beginning of the Buddha's transmission of the path to liberation.
Observed on the fourth day of the sixth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, the day is devoted to prayer, teaching, offering, and the cultivation of virtue. In accordance with tradition, the merit accrued through meritorious deeds performed on this occasion is held to be greatly magnified. Practitioners therefore dedicate the day to study, meditation, acts of generosity, and the aspiration for the welfare of all sentient beings.
